Who is Dr. Perez?
An Experienced Professional
When the legal world meets mental health, a qualified expert can make all the difference.
As a licensed forensic psychologist with over a decade in the field, Dr. Alejandra Perez is an authority for mental health practice in California. Dr. Perez’ mission is to provide clarity and answers for clients and attorneys through psychological services, such as:
Expert Testimony – Take your case to the next level with insight from a professional. Dr. Perez brings forensic depth and clinical breadth to her work by drawing on her training in inpatient psychiatric care, severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), high acuity risk assessment, domestic violence and abuse, incarceration, child and family services, and much more. This background gives Dr. Perez a substantial edge as an expert witness, as judges consider field experience to be the most important criteria for expert credibility (Tadei et al, 2016).
Conservatorship Evaluations – Decisions about conservatorship, particularly in cases of psychological disability, heavily rely on thorough and accurate assessment of cognitive, social, and behavioral functioning (see Marson, Kerr, & McLaren, 2016). Dr. Perez provides specialist services in conservatorship evaluation (and re-evaluation) designed to accurately determine capacity for conservatorship while also providing clear results and recommendations for attorneys and families.
Mental Capacity Evaluations – Assessments for mental capacity, fitness, or competency to stand trial play an essential role in many court proceedings. If your client experienced psychological dysfunction near the time of the offense, or if they currently demonstrate mental health symptoms, psychologists such as Dr. Perez can provide answers. The presence of such symptoms can predict competency to stand trial as well as recovery rates (Gay, Vitacco, & Ragatz 2017).
Professional Consultation – If you need expert insight from a psychologist, Dr. Perez can help. Dr. Perez provides consultation services to attorneys, organizations, and even other psychologists from all over the Los Angeles and Inland Empire region. As the demand for professional psychological consultation in forensic work has expanded, the importance of relying on experienced psychologist has also increased (see Otto & Heilbrun, 2002). Although requests for consultation tend to be diverse, some examples of issues Dr. Perez can help with include risk assessment, conservatorship or mental capacity evaluations, or understanding psychological conditions or terms.
Dr. Perez’ expertise as a psychologist and specialized skill in forensic psychological evaluations set her apart as a professional. In addition to her assessment and consultation skills, Dr. Perez is also one of the few bilingual (English and Korean) psychologists - and perhaps the only bilingual forensic psychologist - in the state of California. A proud graduate of Alliant International University, Fresno, California, Dr. Perez is licensed to practice in California (License # PSY25139) by the California Board of Psychology. Dr. Perez is also an active member of the Psychology-Law Society Division of the American Psychological Association.
An Innovative Leader
Experience the confidence of a trailblazer psychologist. In addition to her prowess as an expert clinician, Dr. Perez also trains and supervises other mental health professionals. In 2017 she helped develop a mental health internship program at Helping Hearts California to help meet the ever-growing need of mental health services in southern California.
Dr. Perez is also a longtime member of the American Psychological Association and has conducted research in forensic psychology. The capstone of her doctoral research was on differences in the levels of psychopathy in child sex offenders. She continues to bring research into her work as she advances her clinical practice and supervision.
A Collaborative Clinician
Dr. Perez’ knack for teamwork and inter-professionalism has served her well in her career as a forensic psychologist. Attorneys and families benefit from the well-organized and analytic, yet compassionate, nature of Dr. Perez’ work. And, as a licensed clinical psychologist and member of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Perez holds herself to the highest ethical standards in the field. In addition to her experiences in forensic mental health, she has also worked with physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, and law enforcement to promote client wellbeing. Dr. Perez also has extensive experience working with organizations such as the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the Department of Children and Family Services.
Who Does Dr. Perez Work With?
Dr. Perez has worked with clients across the lifespan and with a wide range of presenting concerns. Although she has done extensive work with children and adolescents, much of her current forensic practice focuses on adult and geriatric clients. Some examples of issues Dr. Perez has assessed include:
Alzheimer’s disease (or memory loss)
Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
